A SOLO EXHIBITION BY MICHAEL AMERY, 2022
This body of work started as an expansion of a couple of paintings I made titled Opulent Living. These paintings were inspired by the opulence of a sport club found in a remote mining town. I was drawn to the mood - a calm, orderly space, designed for leisure and enjoyment. Yet it was so obviously foreign in the South African landscape, flanked by the desolation of the neighbouring mine dumps.
Places like these remind me just how naive and narcissistic human design can be, and of our tenacious will to control everything. Clinical seafronts; our obsessive placement of palms near all bodies of water; built up areas where we allow such a small, controlled bit of greenery. I believe the order we impose on the natural world helps to soothe our fears regarding the absurdity of our existence. And yet we are more and more frequently reminded that we are at the mercy of nature.
